Dr. Michael Cascio is a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist and hematopathologist with a broad range of experience in clinical environments across academia, industry, and community practice. Michael brings this unique experience and dedication to high-quality, cost-effective patient care to his current roles as Medical Director of the Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital Laboratory and Section Director of Flow Cytometry at the Peninsula Pathologists Laboratory.
Prior to joining Peninsula Pathologists, Michael served as Laboratory Medical Director at Guardant Health, Inc., a leading precision oncology company that developed the first FDA-approved circulating tumor DNA massively parallel sequencing assay (“liquid biopsy”). Alongside his outstanding team members at Guardant Health, Dr. Cascio helped lead the build out of histology and digital pathology services. He worked closely with industry partners in clinically validating and deploying pathology image-based machine learning algorithms for predictive biomarkers. Michael previously served as an attending pathologist at John Muir Health and was section director of the Transfusion Medicine service where he helped implement whole blood transfusion for the trauma program and led efforts to ensure the availability of COVID-19 convalescent plasma during the early phases of the pandemic. Before accepting his position at John Muir Health, Dr. Cascio was an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Oregon Health and Science University, where he served as section director of the Clinical Immunology laboratory and was Director of the Medical Student Pathology rotation and Medical Student Pathology Fellowship. He was actively involved in clinicopathologic studies in the field of hematopathology that resulted in over 15 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
Michael received his Medical Doctorate (M.D.) from the University of Nevada School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society and received the American Society for Clinical Pathology Award for Excellence and Achievement. He then completed his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of California San Francisco, followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology. After completing his training at UCSF, he completed fellowship training in Hematopathology at Stanford University under the mentorship of Drs. Daniel Arber and Roger Warnke. Outside of his professional activities, Michael enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and two children, playing Mario Kart, fiddling with his remote control cars, and searching for the next piece of meat to smoke on his Big Green Egg.
